This 17-inch magnetic chess set for adults offers a generously sized playing surface while remaining foldable for storage. The wooden board and handmade pieces are designed for comfortable handling, and magnets across the board help keep the men in position.

Best For: Families and beginners who want a large wooden board with strong piece retention and compact storage.

Best Travel 2-in-1 Set – 20-Inch Chess and Checkers Mat

If portability and versatility matter most, this chess set for adults doubles as a checkers game and uses a 20-inch roll-up rubber mat. Algebraic coordinates, a carry bag, and included extra pieces make it useful for casual games, travel, and group gatherings.

• Felt-bottom pieces help protect the board, reduce noise, and add grip.
• Folding 15-inch board and individual storage slots support travel and tidy storage.
• Includes two extra queens and instructions covering the chess rules.

Cons:

• At 15 inches, the board is smaller than the 17-inch option in this roundup.

Best Two-in-One Value – Magnetic Chess and Checkers Set

This 15-inch chess set for adults adds checkers to the usual chess experience, giving families and casual players two classic games in one folding wooden board. Magnetic chess pieces, compact storage, and a printed manual make it especially convenient for travel and beginners.

Pros:

• Includes standard chess pieces plus 24 checkers pieces for two games in one set.
• Magnetic chess pieces, felt bottoms, and a folding board support play while traveling.
• Solid wood construction with polished surfaces and rounded, smooth edges.
• Individual storage spaces and a printed manual help keep setup simple.

Cons:

• The checkers pieces are not magnetic, unlike the chess pieces.
• The 15-inch board may feel less spacious than a larger tournament-style set.
• It contains small parts, so supervision may be appropriate around young children.

If versatility is more important than a single-game focus, this set offers practical value. The added checkers pieces make it useful for mixed-skill groups, while the folding magnetic chessboard remains convenient for trips and outdoor play.

How We Picked the Best Chess Set for Adults

We evaluated these sets by considering board size, piece design, portability, storage, versatility, and overall suitability for adult players. Folding wooden boards are useful for home storage and travel, while magnetic pieces help prevent disruptions during play. We also looked for practical extras such as spare queens, integrated storage compartments, and included checker or backgammon components.

Because preferences vary, this list includes compact 15-inch boards, larger 16- to 20-inch options, decorative metal-and-acrylic designs, and combination sets for households that want more than chess.

Quick Comparison

• Best for travel: Choose a folding magnetic set with secure piece storage.
• Best for display: Look for handcrafted wood, larger dimensions, and distinctive weighted pieces.
• Best for families: Magnetic boards and included checkers make casual play easier.
• Best for larger play: A 17- to 20-inch board generally offers more room for oversized pieces.
• Best for variety: Chess, checkers, and backgammon combination sets provide multiple games in one package.

Key Buying Factors for a Chess Set for Adults

Board Size and Playing Space

A 15-inch board is easier to carry and store, while a 17-inch or larger board gives pieces more visual presence and elbow room. Confirm the folded dimensions before buying if cabinet or luggage space is limited.

Materials and Piece Weight

Wooden boards offer a traditional appearance and can suit a living room or office. Acrylic and metal pieces may provide a more contemporary look. Weighted pieces are preferable for a stable, comfortable feel, especially on larger boards.

Magnet Strength and Storage

Magnetic pieces are valuable for travel, children, and uneven surfaces, but magnet strength can vary. Storage slots or a dedicated compartment help prevent lost pieces and make setup faster.

Extra Queens and Included Games

Extra queens are useful for promotions during advanced games. If you want flexibility, a two-sided or 2-in-1 set with checkers or backgammon can offer better value than a chess-only board.

Who Should Buy Which Chess Set for Adults?

Frequent travelers should prioritize a compact folding magnetic set with built-in storage. New or casual players can choose a straightforward wooden set that balances price, size, and easy organization. Experienced players may prefer a larger board, weighted pieces, and spare queens for a more substantial playing experience. Gift buyers should focus on attractive woodwork, distinctive materials, and a size that suits the recipient’s display space. Finally, families and game-room owners may get the most use from a chess, checkers, and backgammon combination set.
